Repurposing an old but beautiful sweater

My partner, Brian, has two beautiful sweaters he bought in Ireland a long time ago. He hasn't worn them in awhile, so I had the idea of making them into pillows. It took me awhile to get to the project, but since winter is coming to an end (thank god!), I sat down and finished 2 of them. I'm an average sewer, so you should be able to do this as well!

Here's how I did it:
Materials used: 2 Irish wool sweaters, 2 pieces of wool felt, sewing machine, 1 needle, thread, a lot of patience

I measured the pillow forms that I was going to use and added 2" on each side so that I would have enough felt and sweater "fabric" to work with. Before cutting the sweater into pieces that I could work with, I sewed a zigzag stitch around the area I was going to use so that the sweater wouldn't unravel.

Once I sewed the stitches around the sweater, I cut the pieces I needed off of the sweater leaving the neck hole and sleaves behind.

I then pinned the pieces of felt and sweater together (wrong side out) and sewed them together leaving one side open to insert the pillow form.

Once both pillow covers were finished, I turned them outside in and inserted the pillow forms. I then whip stitched the open side closed using needle and thread.

Here are some pictures of the finished product!

  1. The pillows look great! I've got some sweaters around...hmmmmm.

  2. Is the sweater that Biran loves/loved? I dn't see the zipper on them, so perhaps his favorite sweater is still alive. I want the update! The pillows look very cool, Domestic daddy! Well done.

  3. LOL...Joe, Brian and I laughed so hard this morning when we read your post. Yes, I do believe he still has his favorite walking sweater ;).

I love hearing from you! If you have a comment for the Domestic Dandy and do not have a google ID, you can always comment using your "name/url."
