Altered States…

When I first learned to knit, I spent weeks knitting a warm scarf for my husband Brian for Christmas using big chunky yarn and needles.

Unfortunately, when I finished the scarf and presented it to him on Christmas morning, I quickly realized I had knitted it too long and wide for him…it was way too impractical to use as a scarf.

As he didn’t want to hurt my feelings, he wore that scarf for a few weeks and then buried it at the bottom of our winter accessories drawer.

Over the years, I kept seeing this scarf in the drawer and wondered how I could alter it. I tried felting it, but had no luck in shrinking the scarf. Then a couple of months ago, I realized I could turn it into an afghan by knitting a separate panel and attaching it to the scarf!

I envisioned the scarf as a contrasting stripe to the rest of the afghan, so I bought skeins of putty colored yarn and began my work knitting the bottom 2/3 of the afghan.

Once I finished knitting the panel, I completed my afghan by sewing the scarf to the panel using the putty colored yarn and a yarn needle and adding fringe to the bottom half of the afghan.

The results were a great success.

Now Brian can finally use his present and I’ve cleared room out of the drawer for more handmade scarves!

An Exquisite Escape

I love this new book, "Encyclopedia of the Exquisite: An Anecdotal History of Elegant Delights" by Jessica Kerwin Jenkins.

This charming read provides some interesting and entertaining history of those objects and activities that have made life a little more beautiful and delightful throughout the centuries. From the development of the art of hot air ballooning or “Aerostation” in 18th Century France to the surprisingly gallant history of the tassel, it is wonderful to discover the origins of those things that give us pleasure and a moments beauty in our lives.

Acquire your copy here, and let me know how you enjoy it! Also makes a great Valentine’s Day gift!

Easy Appetizer

For New Year’s Eve we got together with friends for a progressive dinner that took place at 4 different homes in our gayborhood. We were in charge of appetizers and cocktails at Redbud Terrace and so we were looking for something interesting and flavorful to serve to our guests. One recipe that I fell in love with were these mozzarella-stuffed cherry tomatoes from Real Simple magazine. These bite-size appetizers were easy to prepare and tasted wonderful! See the recipe below!

Mozzarella-stuffed Cherry Tomatoes
Makes 36 pieces

  • 36 cherry tomatoes, stemmed
  • 1lb mozzarella, diced
  • 3 tbsp fresh basil, chopped
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • salt (I used sea salt) and pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar

Cut a thin slice off the top of each tomato. Scoop out pulp with melon baller or small spoon. Lightly salt inside of tomatoes and set cut side down on a paper towel to drain. In a medium bowl, combine cheese, basil, oil, and salt and pepper to taste. Turn tomatoes right side up and divide cheese mixture into each tomato. Drizzle with balsamic vinegar.

Dandy Idea: I purchased mozzarella string cheese sticks at the grocers. I simply unwrapped them and cut them up with my kitchen shears into tiny cubes!

An Organized Life…Is A Good Life

As the new year begins, we all start to think about how to organize our lives. As many of my readers know, I love to organize and have everything in it’s own place. However, even I’m embarrassed to admit how excited I was when I realized the organizational potential of my trash can.

I purchased this basket at The Container Store to hold our recycling way back in early 2010. It came with a second bin and I wasn’t sure how to use it, so I placed it under my desk in our home office and used it as a trash can.

As we were putting our house back together again after Christmas, I needed a place to store my extra yarn and needles that had been laying in a plastic bag by our den sofa for a long time (much to the chagrin of my husband.) As I looked around our home, my eye caught the basket under my desk, and I realized it’s potential.

It is wide enough to hold lots of my yarn…

086and the woven straps are perfect for organizing my needles along the sides, so that I no longer have to dig for them when I need them.

It’s the perfect solution!

As you’re working to organize your life, take a look around and see what new uses you can find for things you already own. It saves money and is a great way to go green!!
