Wishing You A Dandy New Year!

The Dandy is busy making his list for the new year!
See you in 2013!!

Your place at the table

Are you hosting a dinner party this holiday season? Here's a quick and dandy way to create placecards for your holiday table!

I began by downloading a placecard template from the Avery Labels website. They have a ton of free templates to choose from. I chose the basic tent card template to create my holiday place cards.

Once I downloaded the template, I used the borders and shading option to border the lines on my cards in black. Then I typed in the guests name using my favorite font.

Once I printed out the labels, I decided I wanted to "dress" them up a little and found my gold stamp pad in my craft closet.

By simply pressing the placecards face down on the stamp pad, I was able to create a beautiful gold edge to all my cards!

A Christmas Quandary

Are you in the midst of wrapping gifts? I finally sat down to tackle the gift wrapping this past weekend. In preperation, I purchased some beautiful gold wrapping paper, gold ribbon and shiny gold bows the week before...what I didn't purchase were name tags for each present. Upon realizing my situation, I remembered I had some fun wine charms in my craft closet.

I purchased them awhile back for a party we were hosting and didn't use all of them...thankfully. Turns out they make wonderful gift tags!
I simply wrote the recipients name on the tag
and attached the metal ring to the ribbon.
Whallah, a dandy package waiting to be opened Christmas morning!

You can purchase your own set of wine charms at Oriental Trading.

Beautiful Ruins

It may be because I'm wistful of our recent trip to Italy, but I truly enjoyed Jess Walter's book "Beautiful Ruins.

Beginning in a small Italian coastal village in 1962, we watch as local innkeeper Pascale becomes enraptured by a young american actress who has come to his inn "The Hotel Adequate View" to live out the last days of her young life. But, as the story unfolds we learn that she is not dying but is secretly pregnant with the child of one of Hollywood's leading men, who just happens to be filming the movie "Cleopatra" with Elizabeth Taylor in Rome.

As the story unfolds we watch as each of the characters lives unfold from the decisions they made that fateful summer. If you're looking for an enchanting read, I recommend this romantic novel full of joy, regret and lessons learned.

It's Electric

I love hanging our golden ornament wreath on our door each Christmas to welcome our guests. However, this year I felt like it needed a fresh face.

lightsAfter discovering these battery operated LED lights, I decided to make it glow by placing the lights all around the inside of the wreath.

IMG_0673Once I installed the lighst, I secured the battery pack to the wreath with floral wire.
The result is a fresh faced and glowing wreath for Christmas sure to delight!

A Dandy Superhero

This past weekend we were invited to a costume party. It's always a wonderful time and the hostess puts a ton of creative energy into her decorations and refreshments. As I set to the task of planning my costume, I wanted it to be up to the standards of our wonderful hostess, Jackie.

To begin, I had an amazing "green lantern" t-shirt that I wanted to use as the basis of my costume.
However, I needed a few "extras" to make the costume come to life. I envisioned my superhero in the throws of tossing off his street clothes and transforming into Green Lantern. So I added a white dress shirt, dark wash skinny fit jeans and shiny patent leather shoes. I also wanted to add a tie, but I wanted it to be full of motion and energy. So I thought what better way to create motion in my tie than with wire.
I quickly realized floral wire was not going to be strong enough, so I grabbed two wire hangers and began straightening the wire and feeding it through my tie...tucking the ends of the wire behind the lining of the tie. (use a wire cutter to get the right length of wire)
Once the wire was fed through the tie, I began shaping it to resemble a tie flying in the wind.
Once my tie was done, I assembled my costume and added my superhero mask and green lantern ring and...

"In brightest day and blackest night
No evil shall escape my sight
Let those who worship evil's might
beware my power: Green Lantern's light!"

Wedding Supporters

With the recent Chik-fil-A debate and the endless reports of yet another bakery, dress shop, etc. denying gay couples services for their weddings, I wanted to take some time and celebrate those businesses and individuals who support marriage equality and the LGBT community... read more

A Dandy Shopper Tote

Recently, I posted about the Tote Buddy, A clever way to organize and store your shopping bags.

I loved the concept and wondered if I could make one of my own at home. I began by cutting up a cardboard box to use as the sides of my shopper tote.

Take an ordinary cardboard box...
cut down to the dimensions you need for your shopper tote
Once I had my dimensions and cut my cardboard to the desired size, I took a sheet of vinyl remnant (you could also use old wallpaper) and trimmed it to cover my cardboard sides. Make sure you leave room for your shopper tote to expand (see white space between my cardboard sides).

Using colored duct tape, I sealed the edges of the vinyl remnant around the cardboard and lined the inside of my shopper tote.

Once covered, I added a binder clip at the top to hold my shopper tote together.
So organized!
Now, when I'm headed off to the market...I simply reach into my trunk and grab my shopper tote and go!
Use the handles of one of your totes as the shopper tote handle

Tote Buddy!

Sometimes the simplest things make life more enjoyable.

I love this idea from Tote Buddy! I'm always dragging 3 or 4 tote bags to the grocery store in a tangled mess in my hands. However, with the tote buddy that's a thing of the past. Tote Buddy helps organize all of your shopping totes so they are more stylish and easier to carry with you when you go to the store. Watch the video then purchase your tote buddy here!

The Skeletons in the Dandy's Closet

As an avid organizer, I LOVE this idea from Good Housekeeping magazine. Besides being a great hint, it also offered me yet another reason to shop at my favorite store, The Container Store.
Before being enlightened by this time tested magazine, the pants in my closet were a disaster.
No matter how many times I tried to straighten out my pants, they would slide to one end of the hanger looking messy and becoming wrinkled in the process.
So, heeding the advise of GH, I went out and bought some child sized hangers to hang my pants. The results were fantastic. For just $6 and some change, my closet is now streamlined, organized and I'll say it, just more Dandy!

Try this trick at home and see for yourself how it works for you!

Sidenote: After redoing my side of the closet, my husband begged me to redo his side as well. A Dandy's work is never done!

You can go home...and do it in style!

One can go home...and do it with style!

Recently, I went back home to reminisce and celebrate the Central Pennsylvania Arts Festival. If you’ve ever been to Arts Fest, you know that it is a wonderful and magical time of the year. It’s the summer time in happy valley, so the population is smaller, slower paced and ready for fun during the warm months. Read the article.

Twinkle and Shine

Recenlty, I posted about some beautiful but neglected silver urns I discovered at Miss Pixie's Antiques and Whatnots.

They were beautiful, but needed some TLC. To bring back their luster, I simply used my favorite polish, Twinkle Silver Polish Kit. Just a few rubs with the polishing pad and they were as good as new!

Buy your kit today and start polishing your way to bright and shiny!

Dandy Travel Necessities

As we all head off to various parts of the country and the world for our last summer hoorah, here are my top travel necessities.
1. A Good Travel Bag or Carry-On
The number one item, I always carry with me is a traveling or carry-on bag. This contains all of the essentials I need at my fingertips to make my travels, if not easier, then at least a little more enjoyable!

My favorite bag for traveling is my Eagle Creek guide bag. It has seen me through many adventures and has never let me down. It's compact size and various pockets are ideal for carrying anything you might need.

2. An E-Reader
My second essential is my kindle fire. I love my kindle! Filled with books to read and word games to play, it keeps me occupied on my way to my destination.

3. A Good Facial Cloth
My third necessity is a small package of Biore Cleansing Cloths. This is a wonderful item to take with you on a long flight or road trip. Just before arrival, simply pull out a sheet and freshen up. Not only does it feel wonderful, but because of your fresh faced glow your hosts will never know you've just spent 5 hours in the car!

4. Oral B’s Brush-Ups
My fourth top travel necessity is a packet of Oral B’s Brush-Ups. These perfectly sized teeth wipes are great for quickly brushing your teeth before saying “Hello” to your hosts. Just tear open the package, place on your pointer finger and brush your teeth clean. Wallah….no more Doritos and coffee breath…come on you know you’re guilty of it too…

5. A Travel Journal
Next on my list is my travel journal. Used mostly on longer trips, I love not only writing about my new travels, but also reading my past vacation entries on my way to my destination.

6. A Warm and Cozy Scarf
The final essential, I take with me on my chillier travels, is a scarf. This is an essential in a car or on a plane where space is at a premium. Feeling a bit chilly? Don’t lug your bulky jacket around with you. Simply pull out your scarf and drape around your neck. Getting to warm? Simply pack it away, until needed once more.

Well, that does it. My top travel necessities. Make sure to take them on your trip, and see how they enhance your life.

Safe Travels Everyone!
